I built a retro virtual DJ with Shelley on exe.dev

Two turntables, a grayscale old-Mac look, and real MP3s you can scratch and mix. A fun way to learn the Shelley coding agent.

Virtual DJ retro turntables

Virtual DJ is a pair of retro turntables that run in your browser. It’s live at virtual-dj.exe.xyz if you want to give it a spin.

What it does

The whole thing looks like an old grayscale Mac interface. You load an MP3 onto each turntable, then scratch the records or mix between them, just like a real two-deck setup.

How I built it

I built it with Shelley, the coding agent built into exe.dev. Shelley can run on Claude or other models like Codex, and it builds and hosts web apps right on the platform, so there was nothing to deploy separately.

How it went

Honestly, it was pretty easy. It just took a lot of prompting. Getting the look and the controls right was mostly a matter of describing what I wanted, trying it, and asking for changes until it felt right.

Verdict: a fun experiment

This was mostly a way to learn how to work with Shelley, and it did the job. If you want to get a feel for a coding agent, pick something playful like this. You learn just as much, and you end up with a toy you actually want to use.
